I am the church

TV Docudrama, 44 mins, 2020
Director: Klaus T. Steindl

In “I AM THE CHURCH – How the Pope Became Infallible”, the world-renowned church historian Hubert Wolf examines the events surrounding the First Vatican Council (1869-79) which led to the proclamation that the Pope is infallible.

Ever since Pope Pius IX issued the proclamation, the apparent infallibility of the Pope has been a matter of controversy – and has remained extremely effective. What lies behind the church’s declared intention to defend the “eternal, unchanging” Catholic faith? And what effects has this dogma had on practicing Catholics?

Klaus T. Steindl’s film examines how the dogma came into existence and features opponents and supporters who debate the issue using historical examples. As well as Hubert Wolf, the film also includes historians and theologians like Brigitte Mazohl, Michael Seewald and Katharina Lacina.
