We Children of Vienna

Director: Anna Katharina Wohlgenannt  | 2025 | 50 min

Over 300,000 children and young people live in Vienna—in municipal housing and old apartments, on the outskirts and in the city center, in blended and rainbow families, with or without disabilities. And each of them sees Vienna a little differently.
In the documentary “We Children of Vienna,” the children themselves talk about what is good for them, what they are missing – and what needs to change.

Luise, for example, 12 years old, loves the Augarten park, enjoys making films with her friends, and is convinced that Vienna is a beautiful place to live. Leni (9) was part of an initiative with her mother to install a pedestrian traffic light – since it was built, she has been able to walk to school on her own. Levian (8) rides the “Bicibus” to school every morning – an organized cycling group consisting of children and parents – and dreams of a city where children can move around safely. Kayra (14) lives far from the city center, in Strebersdorf, where there are no consumer-free places. Together with her best friend, she spends a lot of time at the youth center there.
For Eazy, 19 years old and queer, the Kinderfreunde Robinson playground in the 19th district is a formative place. With the support of the City of Vienna and the Kinder- und Jugendmillion (Children and Youth Million), an old railway carriage has been converted into the “Café Regenbogen” – a safe space for young queer people. For Eazy, there are still too few spaces like this in Vienna, especially for those under 16.
Adrian (12) was born with Down syndrome and lives with a loving family in Leopoldau. He helps out around the house and attends a progressive school in the 20th district, where diversity is part of everyday life. But his parents are worried: How safe is the city for a child like him? And how open are educational institutions and the job market to young people with trisomy 21?
Fourteen-year-old Ali attends a sports middle school in the 10th district and actively brings his experiences with exclusion to bear in his role as school representative. He wants to address problems, find solutions—and bring democratic participation into everyday school life with an app.

The TV documentary “Wir Kinder von Wien” (We Children of Vienna) brings all these voices together and trusts in what the children themselves have to say. Their perspectives are complemented by the thoughts of parents, teachers, social workers, and youth workers.
The result is a multi-voiced portrait of Vienna – seen through the eyes of children. And it becomes clear: a city that is good for children is good for everyone.
