Venice and the Ghetto

TV Documentary, 90/52 mins, 2016
Director: Klaus T. Steindl

The world’s first Jewish ghetto was established in Venice 500 years ago and named after a discontinued copper foundry. In many ways, the creation of the ghetto marked a turning point in the history of the Jewish people and was met with mixed reactions by the affected Jews. On the one hand, the ghetto symbolised social exclusion. On the other, the ghetto finally allowed Jews to establish stable cultural and social roots in a single place – progress after centuries of displacement and wandering. The film explores the fascinating history of the Venetian ghetto from its creation to the modern day.
